A Tribute to Vin Scully

Courtesy Rob Neyer's blog, here is a fantastic tribute to Vin Scully by Richard Hoffer.

Like many other Dodger fanatics, when I think of the Dodgers, I actually start with Vin rather than any of our current or former players or managers. I've been listening to him call baseball games for almost 30 years, and he's the best announcer I've ever heard.

I get really annoyed with his calling sometimes. Last night was one of them, he couldn't drop it that Andre Ethier made a mistake trying for a triple and thus failed to get the cycle. It had to be repeated the same way at least twice, because clearly I didn't notice it the first time.

Ah well. Other than spot annoyances, he's a very good announcer.

I just wish I could be awake for the late games. Today I'm getting the Fox crew, which isn't as good as Scully but thankfully has two broadcasters I really like (Josh Lewin and Mark Grace). Actually, Grace is often really funny.

Presumably I'll get to hear Vin tomorrow, though the initially-promised Randy Johnson versus Maddux match-up isn't happening. (That said, Max Scherzer versus Clayton Kershaw does give an excellent match of young guns.)
